Welcome to Pioneer Middle School Counseling Department

The Pioneer Middle School Counseling Department provides academic and personal/social support to all students.

Counselors are available to meet with students and families by appointment.

Please note: For questions regarding student schedules, core class placements, or elective courses, please do not email counselors directly during peak season (June-September). Instead, please contact us at pioneermsoffice@steilacoom.k12.wa.us and our support staff will reach out to you as soon as possible.

Course Options 2025-26

In addition to core academic classes, middle school students have a handful of enrichment elective classes they can take during the school year. Please review the Course Options appropriate to your grade level, and contact your grade-level counselor with requests and/or questions.

6th Grade Course Options

All 6th grade students are automatically enrolled in the following classes: ELA Block (2 periods), Science, Math, Social Studies (1 semester), PE/Health (1 semester), and one elective choice.

Elective choices for 6th grade students:

Beginning/Cadet Band (year)
Choir (year)
Exploratory Rotation (different elective class each quarter)
- includes Art, Leadership, Music, and a fourth class

NOTE: Students cannot choose which 4 classes they are scheduled into - they are assigned by counselors based on space availability in each class.

7th grade students typically have room in their schedule for 1-2 elective periods per semester. Choosing Art or Technology means you will get a class within this category.

Students should have 3 choices for electives, which will be used to fill the schedule after all core classes have been scheduled.
